We designed this concert to showcase the best of classical music, both to those who are ardent fans of classical music and those who have never had a chance to experience its pleasures. We chose numbers which were uplifting and beautiful, rousing and melodic. In addition, the programme was a mixture of full orchestra and ensemble performances, allowing the all members of the orchestra to enjoy the limelight.
The programme kicked off with a “Fanfare for the Common Man”, striking and upbeat tone of the event. This was followed by the three movements of the delightful "English Folk Song Suite", with melodies, dances and marches all interwoven by Ralph Paul Williams. We were pleased to perform the Allegro from William Tell, which is fun to listen to, brining back childhood memories of television heroes, but highly challenging to play. The programme then included a medley of Latin music representing south American dances, and then moving back to Russia for the quirky by spicey Waltz from the jazz suite by Shostakovich.
Ensemble pieces included Chanson De Matin played by the one woodwind, flower Duet played by the Duet of trumpets and meditation by Jules Massenet, that showcased our first violinists, whose full-time occupations are as medical student.
The event was a thrilling and exciting step in many new directions away from our more ususal ground of film or theatre music in addition to those mentioned above. Undertaking a full classical program was an adventure in itself, but inclusion of the ensemble work was again a new direction we welcomed. But the new did not stop there, we were pleased to welcome our newest member of the orchestra a clarinet player who is also a wonderful vocalist. She provided just the most beautiful rendition of O Mio Babbino Caro and O Sole Mio to the accompaniment of the orchestra.
We were very pleased to obtain the support that filled the Keele University Chapel. We are so grateful to all of the audience who have supported the orchestra over many years. It has been a pleasure to welcome new members to the orchestra and to allow them the opportunity to feel the surge of excitement when playing in a concert play and receive the applause of the whole audience.
In our next concert on 29th June we should change the style of music again, and have a program that reflects the summer and play more jazzy and summery numbers, perhaps something from Porgy and Bess. We will be sharing the event with the award-winning Chanteuse Ladies Chamber Choir.
