Who We Are

A BRIEF HISTORY

The University Hospital Orchestra (UHO) has enjoyed an evolutionary history that started by chance in 2007. It was at first an orchestra for staff, but even at that early point in our history, we enjoyed a membership that encompassed musicians for all walks of life and abilities, beginners to virtuoso. The membership now includes health care staff and members who range in professions from school teachers to farmers. The strength of the orchestra is the membership who enjoy musical experiences of big band, to theatre, film and classical music.

New Beginnings 2007

The University Hospital Orchestra was first conceived in Autumn 2007. A chance meeting with meeting with a Radio Stoke presenter hatched a plan for a Christmas Concert for the Hospital, known at that time as University Hospital of North Staffordshire. After 3 Rehearsals the concert was broadcast, an embryonic step forward. A small ensemble of called "Take Five" was the offspring of this event.

A Second Start Christmas 2009

An attempt to reform an orchestra was made to perform a concert in Christmas 2008. Players were borrowed from Keele University and an eminent musician from the Halle Orchestra to swell numbers sufficiently enabling the title "orchestra". The concert was a success and formed the model for future Christmas Concerts; a first half medley of classical and theme music, supporting soloists, and a second half Carol concert.

Memorable Events Variety is our game

We have been privileged to perform at numerous major entertainment venues. These include at The Liverpool Arena, Trentham Gardens, Birmingham and Manchester Conference Centres. We have also performed with award winning choirs, singers who have achieved careers on the London stage, and have had as guests the All England Latin Ballroom Dance Champions at our Summer Ball. Yet, we are most of all proud to have a membership constituted of players of all abilities and standards, wide range of ages from teenage to retired, and a wide range of professions, healthcare and non-healthcare.
