The Orchestra and Chanteuse Chamber ladies choir enjoyed presenting an upbeat summery concert on 29th June. It was a pleasure for the groups to perform together again. The evening was expertly compered with touch of humour to link the evening together.
The orchestra presented music from the dance halls of the 1930’s, ‘Sing Sing Sing’ featuring top class drum solos, to a medley of Mancini’s film music. The summer sounds were carried forward with the warm Southern American stage music of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Evita’. The sound of America was again brought in with the film theme music featuring the violin and flute performances in ‘Big Country’ and of course the memorable Jazz sounds of Glen Miller played by the Saxes, Clarinets and brass. As this is a summer concert we had to include the music of the biggest Box office hit, ‘Barbie Girl’ and finished with the raucous, fun loving huckleberry sound of ‘Hootenanny’.
The lady choristers have grown from a fledgling choir in 2008, through to recent successful competitive performances. They have brought the delights of their new programme to this concert. As with the orchestra they brought a range of musical styles from classical such as ‘Laudamus Te’ to popular sound of ‘When I Fall in Love’, from musical theatre, Schonberg’s ‘Bring Him Home’ to other styles presenting many other beautifully presented numbers.
The orchestra has been privileged to have many loyal and committed players. Our players have very busy and successful careers, and yet from these they have taken time out to play with the orchestra. Two such members, our experienced cellist and clinical biochemist, and drummer an Emergency doctor, are both sadly be leaving the orchestra to further their careers and personal lives. Whilst both will be sorely missed from the orchestra, we would like to wish them the greatest of success.
